Hi,
Have you ever wondered why FaceBook is free? Why search engines are free? Or you still think there is such a thing as a free lunch?
Have you ever thought how many thousands of computers have to work hard in data centers around the world for these services to operate? Have you thought of the cost of the electricity required for these machines and their air conditioning, the rental costs, communication lines, etc? It is A LOT OF MONEY. Who spends such money without getting anything in return? You guessed it, no one.
You might think of advertising as being their hope, but no, this is their pretense. Think about it, all such online services are basically engines that collect the most difficult information to collect: social information on a big scale.
We witnessed these days such a social experiment, with FaceBook users being the test subjects. Which of the cartoons of your childhood mostly expresses your personality or something like that. Put it as your new profile picture...
Oh my, it is simply so cute... irresistibly cute... my childhood heroes are back... How can I resist showing what a pure soul I still am? Give me a break...
When universities perform such social experiments they usually inform the test subjects, either before-hand or post mortem, but I don't think FaceBook or anybody else will inform us that we are their test subjects...
Have Fun!
Dimitrios Staikos
